I look at my name for him in my phone with a frown. I think we’ve moved past the wall I’d put up between us. I tap into his name and update him to Derek Mate. That’s better.

I smile at the new tag for his number before tucking the phone into my back pocket and heading out of the room.

“Hunter Cassie!” I turn to see Chief Mattias waving at me and walking quickly in my direction.

“Chief. What is it?” I turn so I’m facing him instead of the exit.

“I wanted you to know that I’ve already had three Hunters come to me complaining about the new rule. I’m sure we will have more pushback since any change is hard, but this may be more challenging in general. Have you heard about any supes wanting to join us from those guys you’d brought with you?” He slows to a stop a few feet from me so we can talk in normal voices instead of yelling across cubicles.

“Not yet. But I haven’t had much time to check in with them since I had to drop Lissa off at the station and just finished talking to the Hunters. We had a decent turnout for the meeting. About fifteen Hunters including me. The few that didn’t make it weren’t answering their phones—I’m guessing in the middle of a case so couldn’t answer—so I’ll need to follow up with them individually. Can we walk and talk?”

He nods, and we start moving toward the exit as I continue.

“Lissa just called to say the cyclops has been found. We’re going to take the guys and a few cops with us to help build that relationship. Maybe we do something similar with Hunters who are nervous about the new arrangement?”

“That may be a good idea. It’s going to be a process, but we’ll need them to figure it out quickly if we’re going to protect the public from the sorcerer menace. Can you ask your friends to send any potentials our way as soon as possible? At least a couple Hunters seemed more open to the idea, so I’d like to see them partnered quickly. Show the naysayers it can work.”

“Of course. Is there anything else?” We’re reaching Barbara’s desk near the front, making my heart clench and my determination for this to be a success build.

“Once you’re done with the cyclops case, let me know. If the police are jumping in this quickly, I think we can send them some of our easier cases to help with our workload. We’ll keep the more challenging cases for Hunters and their supe partners until we can start some courses so the police have a better idea of what they’re doing.”

Chief Mattias stops us when we reach security with a hand on my shoulder. I look up at his grim face, pity filling me for everything he’s had to deal with since Chief Torrez passed. His job and responsibilities have changed so much in that very short period of time.
